AT&T’s Role in a Democratic Society

The democratic role in society of the AT&T entity is just like any other interest group in the United States American politics. In every election they never fail to provide candidates from both the Democratic and Republican Party with special interest money and campaign contributions to individuals and in the forms of PACs. Legislature influence is prominent with strong lobbying efforts from AT&T so there is plenty of agency and bureaucratic leverage.

However, critics of the telecom giant believe some of the company’s practices are unhealthy to an open democratic society.  From campaign finance to judicial proceedings, critics accuse AT&T of overstepping their bounds by dissecting loopholes in the system such as immunity from prosecution for their illegal activities. Sprint Nextel CEO Dan Hesse commented on AT&T’s planned acquisition of T-Mobile USA , saying,”a tie-up between the two would hurt innovation and set the country’s wireless industry back.If AT&T is allowed to swallow T-Mobile, competition will be stifled, growth will be stifled and wireless innovation will be jeopardized.”

AT&T SWOT [Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Threats]

I decided  to break away from the boring and tangling AT&T site to get a different preceptive on the strengths and weaknesses of the company over time. After doing some research I stumbled  upon a popular model used to identify exactly what we’re looking for. According to  WikiSWot, One of the best ways to develop a picture of any company is with a SWOT analysis — a look at a company’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. With the data from WikiSW OT.com and other literature, I’m going to track over time,  AT&T’s SWOT.

Discourse Surrounding the Legislature, Judiciary and Public

Two major scandals have occurred in the 2000’s that exemplifies exactly how much influence  a large corporation such as AT&T has on within the legislator, judiciary and discourse surrounding the public. Beginning in October 2001, President Bush mandated a secret presidential order demanding the National Security Agency (NSA) to administer a range of surveillance activities inside of America with no statutory authorization or court injunction. The major issue surrounding the executive order was the electronic surveillance of Americans’ telephone and internet communications with the cooperation of major telecommunications companies, mainly AT&T. The National Security Agency is a United States government intel agency that is responsible for the collection and analysis of foreign communications. According to the NSA site, it “coordinates, directs, and performs highly specialized activities to protect U.S. government information systems and produce foreign signals intelligence information.”

Policy Positions Taken Over Time

When looking at major policy positions taken by AT&T over time, things haven’t changed much.  While researching for material on the major policy positions taken over time by the group, the same place where I’ve been pulling  data from, actually has relevant and updated information revolving around the issue.  In existence is the att public policy blog, which serves to provide the public with certain issues surrounding At&T and policy issues.  The term “universal service”, appears in recent pushes for policy which originated with Theodore Newton Vail, president of the original AT&T and head of the Bell System.  Newton’s future for the company really began in 1907 with the corporate slogan “One Policy, One System, Universal Service”. Universal service is intended as a contrast to the “dual service” that arose after the original Bell telephone patents expired in 1894, where independent telephone companies operated as competitors in Bell markets.

Looking into 2011, AT&T and their connections have not given up on their quest for universal service. Through lobbying efforts and connections just a few months ago the FCC officially released their complex platform into getting the public 100% broadband. The FCC unveiled  its Universal Service Fund (USF) and Intercarrier Compensation (ICC) reform effort which will not only bring universal service, but also eliminate waste and inefficiencies by bringing robust, affordable broadband to all.

Sources of Funding

Since day 1,  AT&T’s  main focus has been communication. Starting  out as phone  providers, today AT&T ‘s evolution has led them to deliver a portfolio of services which have  become crucial to today’s marketplace. Sources of funding  are obtained through consumer services such as wired and wireless voice and data, broadband Internet, TV and messaging services. AT&T also offers one of the industry’s leading  enterprise business solutions to corporate customers, providing a single source for local, national, global and wireless voice and data services.

Political Campaign Contributions and Corporate Ideology

Along the way,  AT&T has made the list of United States’ second largest donor to political campaigns, says the Center for Responsive Politics.  Looking beyond the Ma-Bell generation and focusing on post AT&T, in 1990, $36 million were donated to both Republicans and Democrats. The estimate favored Republicans 56% over Democrats at44%.

The USA Today exposed in 2005, a list of fifty-three companies who gave the maximum $250,000 donation toward President Bush’s inauguration, which included AT&T, Chevron Texaco,Ford Motor Company and 50 other corporate entities.  When a corporation has grown to be this massive, tracking one solid state of ideology can be difficult to calculate. What we can do however, is research areas of contributions, lobbying and recipients, to see how much went to who and for what causes.

A History in the Making

The pictures obtained above depict at&t in its birth stages. Historically, At&t roots back to 1875, a year before the harmonic telegraph was introduced by Bell. Formed as the American Telephone and Telegraph Corporation, the entity was formed by  Alexander Graham Bell, Gardiner Hubbard and Thomas Sanders, who agreed to finance his work.

Bell envisioned a talking telegraph. Him and his two partners worked and were  eventually granted 3 patents in the late 1870’s. In attempt to exploit the invention, they formed the Bell Telephone Company.
